Winter Advising & Orientation

Winter A&O 2021

Winter Advising & Orientation (Winter A&O) is for new First-Year (including Running Start), and Transfer students entering Western during Winter Quarter and supports your transition to campus with an academic advising and campus orientation program. 

Winter A&O is designed to help you begin your Western experience with confidence and success. Your participation will help you feel more comfortable and prepared to begin your career at Western.

Rather than a formal advising session, new Post-Baccalaureate students for Winter Quarter are invited and encouraged to schedule an individual advising appointment prior to registration.  

Winter A&O Session Schedules

Students will participate in a one day Winter A&O session held in Zoom. While students must be available from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time, they will not be spending the entire day on Zoom. Students must make a reservation via the Admitted Student Portal in order to attend, and will receive Zoom meeting information 24 hours in advance in order to join their session.

Watch Pre-Advising Presentation 

In advance of participating in your day-of program, spend some time watching the Pre-Advising Presentation which will be delivered in your Virtual Advisor Canvas course. 

Complete Proctored ALEKS MPA 

If you haven’t already, please make sure you’ve completed the proctored version of the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment prior to your session.  

9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PST

Individual 30 Minute Academic Planning Appointments (REQUIRED), Return to your Zoom link from the 9:00 a.m. Advising Session. Please be prepared to provide your name and W#.

Students will be assigned to a 30-minute individual advising time where they will meet with an advisor to review your winter quarter registration plan. Students will receive their assigned 30 minute time in their Academic Planning Session at 9am.

Winter Quarter Registration

New First-Year students must attend Winter A&O in order to register for Winter Quarter classes, and will register as a part of the program.

New Transfer and Post-bacc students for Winter Quarter are assigned a time and date for class registration based on the number of credits earned. Haven't registered yet? Here are your next steps for course registration:

  1. Plan your winter quarter schedule by watching the Pre-Advising Presentation found in the Virtual Advisor Canvas course. Canvas is Western’s online learning management system for classes. The Virtual Advisor Canvas course provides information about graduation requirements, major planning, registration, and tips for success your first quarter. The Pre-Advising Presentation includes information on how to access your student records and register for classes. You must set your Universal Account password in order to access Canvas. You can learn more about navigating Canvas on the ATUS website.  
  2. Register for Classes. Check your Registration Status: Login with your Universal login, identify the term you would like to register for, and click submit. This page will include any holds on your account that may prevent registration.

New Student and Family Orientation

Western Washington University's Orientation website features virtual events, informational videos, and resources to help you learn more about academic departments and campus services and explore areas of academic and personal interest to you. Events are open to both students and family, unless otherwise noted.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Winter Advising & Orientation (Winter A&O) program is Western’s orientation, academic advising, and course registration program for new transfer, first-year, and Running Start students. Winter A&O provides critical support to new students as you navigate the academic advising and class registration experience. In addition to developing core academic preparation skills, students will also learn about campus life and services, gain a better understanding of Western's academic expectations and resources, meet with helpful faculty, staff and student advisors, and begin connecting with fellow new and current WWU students. 

The Winter A&O 2021 program will be a virtual experience. Students will complete an online reservation to sign up for a session. Students will have access to an online academic advising preparation module prior to your session, as well as a virtual advising session in small groups with faculty/staff advisors during the program.  

While the academic advising and course registration sessions are for students only, orientation events and resources are open for both students and family members to access.  

For Orientation, new students and parents/family members are able to access a wide variety of resources and events on the New Student Services/Family Outreach website. We have created a variety of engaging offerings that students and family can explore and experience together, navigate at your own pace, and connect to campus departments as you need. 

Additionally, we encourage family to review the Preparing for WWU webpage for required and recommended steps for students take to prepare for their overall orientation, advising, and registration process and transition to Western. 

Attendance at the Winter A&O program is strongly recommended for new transfer students. Students attending Winter A&O will receive academic advising and registration support during the program. 

Please note that new transfer students for Winter Quarter are assigned a time and date for class registration based on the number of credits earned. Transfer students do not need to attend Winter A&O in order to register for classes. View the Registration schedule on the Registrar's Office website for more information. 

Attendance at the Winter Advising & Orientation (Winter A&O) 2021 program is required for new first-year and Running Start students. The Winter A&O program is the opportunity for students to receive academic advising, assistance in preparing for course registration, and register for Fall Quarter classes. All first-year and Running Start students must complete a Winter A&O session in order to register for classes. 

New transfer and post-baccalaureate students for Winter Quarter are assigned a time and date for class registration based on the number of credits earned. Phase I registration is anticipated to begin on Monday, November 16. Please view the Registration schedule on the Registrar's Office website for more information. 

Transfer students do not need to attend Winter A&O in order to register for classes. Students will receive advising and registration support as a part of the program.

New first-year and Running Start students for Winter 2021 will register as a part of the Winter Advising & Orientation program on the date of their session. First-year and Running Start students are required to attend Winter Advising & Orientation in order to register.  

Students must make an online reservation to sign up for a Winter A&O session using the Admitted Student Portal

Incoming students for Winter 2021 will be provided instructions via email from the Office of Admissions for logging into the Admitted Student Portal. If you need assistance logging into the Portal, please contact the Office of Admissions

If you want to change the session date that you selected when you made your reservation, please cancel your reservation by following the “Cancel Reservation” link in the confirmation email you received. After you have cancelled your reservation, return to the Admitted Student Portal to make a new reservation. You may cancel your reservation up until reservations have closed for that particular session date. 

Please note that we cannot guarantee space will be available in your desired session date. To confirm a particular date is available before cancelling your current reservation, please contact New Student Services/Family Outreach at nssfo@wwu.edu or 360-650-3846. 

Advising and Registration/Academic Planning sessions will be held in Zoom. Students will be provided instructions via email regarding how to join their Zoom meeting 24 hours prior to the session check-in time. We recommend that students participate in Zoom with a laptop or tablet to maximize their experience.

There are several required actions that all new students must take prior to their first quarter at Western, some of which need to be completed prior to your advising and registration session. Please view our Preparing for WWU page for a list of required and recommended actions for new students. Students can also log into the Admitted Student Portal to keep track of the status of measles clearance, the receipt of final transcripts, and Winter A&O reservations.
