Explore the Virtual Advisor Canvas Course
As a new student, you have been given access to an online Canvas advising course called the Virtual Advisor. This course provides information about graduation requirements, major planning, registration, and tips for success your first quarter. The course also contains links to online academic and campus resources. Access the course now by logging into wwu.instructure.com. You must first set your Universal Account password before gaining access to Canvas.
Plan Your Fall Quarter Course Schedule
- Pre-Advising Presentation Video: This presentation will give you information on Western’s resources to help you begin planning for your degree at Western and more specifically how to prepare for fall registration. You can find the link for the Pre-Advising Presentation video in the Announcements section of the Virtual Advisor Canvas course.
Review New Student Advising Resources: Links to additional advising resources are in the same Announcements section as the Pre-Advising Presentation video. Please review how your credits transfer, look at the Programs of Study in majors/minors majors/minors that interest you, contact Academic Departments for specific major advising, and build a couple fall class schedules. You may call the Academic Advising Center with questions but note appointment availability is limited until September when all orientation programs have ended.

Fall 2020 Registration
Your next opportunity to make changes to your fall schedule was to come with the opening of Phase II Registration on September 8. With the latest announcement regarding changes to our plans for fall in mind, we will be reopening fall registration and waitlisting to all new Transfer and Post-baccalaureate students for a short period of time this coming weekend, opening on Friday, August 7 at 11:00am and closing on Monday, August 10 at 10:00am. New Student and Family Orientation
Western Washington University's Orientation website features over 40 virtual events, over 40 informational videos, and resources to help you learn more about academic departments and campus services and explore areas of academic and personal interest to you. Opportunities to connect with current students will give you a better sense of student activities, clubs and organizations, as well as what Bellingham has to offer. Events are open to both students and family, unless otherwise noted.

The Transitions program is Western’s orientation, academic advising, and course registration program for new transfer and post-baccalaureate students. Transitions provides critical support to new students as you navigate the academic advising and class registration experience. In addition to developing core academic preparation skills, students will also learn about campus life and services, gain a better understanding of Western's academic expectations and resources, meet with helpful faculty, staff and student advisors, and begin connecting with fellow new and current WWU students.
The Transitions 2020 program will be a virtual experience. Students will complete an online reservation to sign up for one of four sessions. Students will have access to an online academic advising preparation module prior to your session, as well as a virtual advising session in small groups with faculty/staff advisors during the program.

While the academic advising and course registration sessions are for students only, orientation events and resources are open for both students and family members to access.
For Orientation, new students and parents/family members are able to access a wide variety of live events, informational videos, and resources that can be found on the New Student and Family Orientation website. For additional resources, please review the New Viking Handbook.
Additionally, we encourage family to review the Preparing for WWU webpage for some required and recommended steps for students take to prepare for their overall orientation, advising, and registration process and transition to Western.
The Transitions 2020 program was not required, but strongly recommended. The Transitions program will be the first opportunity for students to register for Fall Quarter classes. Students who do not attend Transitions will have the next opportunity to register for Fall classes when Phase II of registration begins on Tuesday, September 8.

There are several required actions that all new students must take prior to their first quarter at Western, some of which need to be completed prior to your advising and registration session. Please view our Preparing for WWU page for a list of required and recommended actions for new students. Students can also log into the Admitted Student Portal to keep track of the status of measles clearance, the receipt of final transcripts, and Transitions reservations.
