Reflecting on College
What does your student want to achieve by the time they graduate?
It's okay for students to spend time considering the possibilities available.
As your student moves through an academic year, encourage them to take time to reflectively consider why they are in college, and use the following prompts to start conversations:
- First Generation college students bring many strengths to the career planning process. Encourage your student to check out WWU’s Career Services Center First Generation Students webpage to help in identifying strengths and planning their next steps.
- Explore your interest, goals, and values. Recommend that they take time to use campus resources to support them in choosing or changing their major and talk about their desired career path.
- Ask them if they know about Western’s Career Services Center, internships, and opportunities to study abroad or put their skill, education and training to practical use through the Peace Corps.
- Have they considered additional studies through graduate school or extended learning programs to help them prepare for a career in a specific field of study?
