Welcome Families

Sabah in front of Old Main

President Sabah Randhawa

Welcome to the start of your family’s journey at Western! In many ways, the “Western experience” is known for exceeding expectations about undergraduate education: impactful and engaging learning experiences, including opportunities to work on original research with faculty mentors; an adventurous approach to learning that goes beyond the classroom, from service learning to environmental explorations and leadership opportunities; enriching personal connections that last a lifetime.

For those of us who work at Western—more than 2,000 faculty and staff serving in a huge variety of roles inside and outside of the classroom—our common purpose is to advance three important goals that directly impact students’ education:

First, we are committed to advancing the success of all students joining Western, to ensure that each of them has the opportunities and the resources they need to be successful at Western and beyond.

Second, we are committed to increasing Western’s impact in Washington State by expanding access to our programs, striving to meet the state’s needs for a skilled workforce and engaged citizenry, and preparing our graduates to make a positive impact in their communities.

And third, we continually strive to enhance the quality of our educational programs and learning experiences for every student, which I hope was a key factor that led your student to choose Western.

Please know that your student is also joining a community that is resolute and united in the belief that racism and bigotry have no place on our campus or in our society. We are committed to a university culture that is based on respect, kindness, and compassion, a place where everyone takes responsibility for advancing a culture that values the dignity and humanity of each member. We are also committed to providing an intellectual atmosphere in which diverse perspectives and viewpoints are welcome, critically examined, and engaged with civility and respect. Advancing and embracing diversity of identity and thought is not only an integral part of Western’s mission, but also critical to preparing our students to succeed in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Thank you for joining the Western family, and for supporting your student during their time here. We are excited to help your student achieve their goals and look forward to helping them succeed throughout their time at Western and beyond.

Sincerely,

Sabah Randhawa
