Fall Family Weekend

Thanks for joining us for Fall Family Weekend 2019

October 18th – 20th, 2019

Rain or shine, it was great to see so many families creating their own memorable Western experiences with their students during this year’s Fall Family Weekend! With new and returning programs, there were numerous activities offered to facilitate engagement both on and off campus. Some of the new programming that we were pleased to offer included the Student Research in Action speaker series that showcased the depth of opportunity and tremendous talent at Western while providing a window into how these projects are impacting our knowledge of ocean wildlife, submarine volcanoes and offshore earthquakes and even Mars! We were also grateful to partner with several campus departments to bring back some of the historically popular presentations, performances and tours like Campus to Career, Education Abroad, Birds of Western and Huxley College plays along with the Outback Farm and introduce a new talk with community bee keepers in Western’s own Bee Apiary. The Art and Art History Departments’ demonstrations and tours hit record attendance numbers while we enjoyed steady flows throughout Friday and Saturday at the Fall Family Weekend Welcome Center. And proving once and for all that it’s never too cold, rainy or wet for ice cream and good tunes, Ben and Jerry’s and KUGS (Western’s student radio station) kept us movin’ and groovin’ with ice cream in Red Square.

Our evening events saw strong numbers as well with folks getting their “blue on” during Viking Madness packing Carver Gymnasium on Friday night while the Women’s Soccer Team gave us more reasons to celebrate with their bunker party and WIN against SFU on Saturday night—Go Vikings! Families were able to share some good laughs together as well thanks to the special live comedy improv performances by the Dead Parrots and the Upfront Theatre. And if you didn’t make it to one of the sold-out planetarium shows or brunch and tours at BelleWood Acres Farm, we hope you will consider joining us for one or both next year!

That being said, your feedback is critical to the success of our future planning efforts! Please watch for the Fall Family Weekend participant survey that will be emailed in the coming weeks. Hope to see you next year!
